APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Each year, the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association, in cooperation with VFIS of New Jersey, will award scholarships to assist individuals desiring to further their academic education through post secondary study in fire science or programs approved by the Scholarship Committee as meeting the requirements for the fire service education. There are two programs.

VFIS of New Jersey Scholarships. $2,000.00 is awarded each year.

Any person who is an active member of a State, County, Municipal, Community, Industrial or Federal Fire Department located within the State of New Jersey and who has demonstrated proficiency as a member, is eligible to apply for a scholarship.

Walter G. Fortnum, Jr. Scholarships. The amount and number is determined by the Committee and based on the earnings of the Walter G. Fortnum, Jr. Scholarship Fund.

Any person who is an active member of a State, County, Municipal, Community, Industrial or Federal Fire Department located within the State of New Jersey and who has demonstrated proficiency as a member and any member of the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association or their immediate families (including grandchildren) is eligible to apply for a scholarship.

How to apply

Applicants must complete all sections of the Application. In addition, attach a statement of at least 250 words stating why you are applying for financial assistance and why you believe this course or degree will be useful to you as a firefighter or fire officer.

In evaluating the applications, preference will be given to those demonstrating need, desire and initiative. Credits previously attained in college level course should be listed, and a transcript furnished, if possible.
